PRACTICE STATEMENT

In my work, I use the body as a starting point to examine how societal structures shape bodily identity through fixed expectations and norms. I explore how beliefs about the body are formed and sustained, while seeking new possibilities for connection that challenge these frameworks.

This interest stems from personal experiences of how my body was perceived and sexualised as a woman, generating expectations and enforcing gender norms that felt confining and oppressive. While rooted in my own experience, these dynamics are not just individual, but systemic. They manifest differently across cultural, religious, and historical contexts, yet remain grounded in patriarchal power structures that marginalise immigrants, PoC, women, lgbtq+ individuals, and anyone who deviates from dominant white, cisgender, heteronormative standards.

Through my work, I aim to free myself from internalised constraints while inviting viewers to question their own assumptions about how bodies are seen, perceived, and treated in relation to one another. It is important to me that the work remains both intimate and socially and politically resonant. I strive to avoid prescribing meaning, instead leaving space for interpretation and personal reflection in how the works are experienced.

My practice is concept-driven and spans multiple mediums. I began working with sculpture, initially experimenting with metal through forging, reshaping, and creating wearable forms. These objects first existed as standalone sculptures, but gradually evolved into performative elements. My most recent project—completed over the course of a year as my graduation work—combined video performance and video installation. Moving forward, I intend to continue working with film and video installation, integrating my body sculptures as central elements within these moving-image works.
